Gap Your Spark Plugs?

Once upon a time, car owners used to buy a half dozen or so of these little wonders of steel and ceramic. They were even advertised on TV and in magazines, touting their relative merits. You would voluntarily open the hood of your car, pull some wires out (without getting them mixed up) and unscrew the old spark plugs (with a special socket). You would then "gap" the new ones – makes sure this little arm at the bottom was a certain distance from a little nubbin. Screw them in, reconnect the wires and you were off.

When was the last time you saw a spark plug commercial? When was the last time you saw anybody use a timing light? When was the last time you even changed your own oil? These were once common things!

Cars are now so complicated that only crazy people even know how to open the hood.

And so it is with the Internet.

The standards for a professional looking website are now quite high. It's not that it's difficult, it just takes experience and the right tools. The principles of roofing are not complicated, but it's also something best left to the experienced. In both cases, the price of inexperience could be unforeseen and unwanted consequences.

We can make it easier on you, though. First, our prices are super-competitive. We offer fixed pricing – you'll know before we start what you're getting and how much it will cost. We also offer different options – purchase by check or credit card; rental (low monthly payments) or leasing (monthly payments for a fixed time, then a "buyout" payment. We hate most CMS systems. Content Management Systems are at the heart of these "shake and bake" offerings we discussed. They let you, the site owner, make changes to your own site. Sounds good in theory. Here's a screwdriver, pull this lever to pop the hood and off you go. In our experience, they enable the site owner to make their site worse and worse until it's an unrecognizable mess. We offer something better. We have developed our own CMS, fitting with our philosophy. Ask us about it.
Tips and Tricks

Have you noticed we use the phrase "Small Business Website" here and there on this page? Here's a secret: That's the market we're targeting. Now those specific three words are not there just because they sound nice together.

True story. I once worked on a site with a guy who used to be a newspaper writer. Nice enough guy. He insisted, no arguments entertained, that the word be split in two – "web site" – wherever it was used. That's what the AP Style Guide said, and that was that.

Here's what Google says. "Small Business Website" gets 74,000 monthly searches. "Small Business Web site" gets 27,100 monthly searches. "Small Business Websites" gets 12,100. "Small Business Web sites" gets 2,400. If you are going to dip your oar in a stream, shouldn't you dip it in the biggest stream available? Who'da thought a space or an "S" would make a two to thirty times difference. Short answer: we'da. Finding, and capitalizing, on these little differences that can have a huge impact is what sets us apart.
